Before using the chamois for the first time, it must be thoroughly washed with warm soapy water until the rinse water no longer has a yellow tint. Harsh chemicals and degreasing soaps should be avoided. Prior to each car cleaning use, the chamois should be rinsed with clean water and completely wrung out. After each use, it should be thoroughly washed with clean soapy water, rinsed, and wrung out repeatedly until clean. The chamois should then be hung to dry in a shaded area, away from direct sunlight.
The original chamois was made from the skin of the mountain antelope, but as the antelope are now protected, the best chamois sold today is made from sheepskin, tanned through a process involving the oxidation of marine oils in the skin. This tanning process can result in a mild fish odor, which typically dissipates after a few washes.
Sheepskin chamois has a generous nap, providing a large surface area for holding water (up to 7 times its weight). Its softness, high absorbency, and scratch-free characteristics make it the preferred choice for washing and drying cars, compared to microfiber alternatives.
